Huawei Launches Intelligent Site Power Solutions at MWC 2023

Feb 28, 2023

[Barcelona, Spain, February 28, 2023] Yao Quan, President of Site Power Facility of Huawei Digital Power, launched the intelligent site power solutions during the Global Digital Power Forum at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2023.

According to Mr. Yao, operators are reducing carbon emissions and energy expenditures to meet carbon neutrality targets, shoulder rising energy prices, and keep up with accelerated 5G network deployment.

However, conventional site power solutions have a high total cost of ownership (TCO) and carbon emissions. This hinders network evolution and prevents operators from achieving carbon neutrality.

To address these issues, Huawei proposes intelligent site power solutions that offer 'Intelligent Simplicity', 'Intelligent Green', and 'Intelligent Saving’. By serving as a key enabler for developing green and low-carbon networks, these intelligent site power solutions will help operators accelerate the achievement of their carbon neutrality goals.

Intelligent Simplicity: Simplified 4G/5G deployment at an optimal TCO

  • Sites can be simplified from rooms to cabinets or poles. For example, a wall- or pole-mounted blade power solution doesn't take up any space while improving the site energy efficiency from 60% to 97%. The five-year TCO of a typical 10 kW pole site is 59% lower than that of a room site.

  • All-scenario intelligent power management enables capacity expansion without backup power, reducing energy storage investment and site construction costs.

  • Intelligent indoor and outdoor blade power systems allow old and new power supplies to work in parallel for power supply and backup. Legacy equipment can be reused for capacity expansion without adding cabinets, reducing site construction costs and maximizing the return on investment.

Intelligent Green: Modern power systems save energy and reduce carbon emissions

  • Grid power or diesel generators are no longer the only power sources for sites. More diverse clean energy sources can be used. As the levelized cost of energy (LCOE) decreases, the proportion of green electricity increases.

  • Huawei's iSolar solution adopts the four-in-one solar controller, which utilizes high-voltage serial connection architecture to make green power acquisition easier and reduce engineering costs by 15%. Additionally, PV optimizers are used to reduce shading losses and increase clean power generation by 20%. The solar+storage intelligent synergy can enable the green power utilization rate to reach 100%.

  • An innovative hybrid power solution can be used to upgrade the intelligent power supply, PV power generation, cooling, and energy storage systems. This improves PV energy yields and reduces energy consumption for cooling. Areas with no or poor grid power no longer need to rely on diesel generators. This reduces the LCOE by 27% (using sites in Ethiopia as an example). Also, sites with high grid power prices can use more green electricity and see ROI in just 3 years.

Intelligent Saving: Integrating backup power and energy storage saves and makes money

  • Site energy storage devices use smart lithium batteries instead of lead-acid batteries or common lithium batteries. These both store and back up power to maximize asset value.

  • In backup power scenarios, smart lithium batteries can implement intelligent intra-site collaboration, such as voltage boosting, hybrid use, parallel connection, and anti-theft, reducing battery investment and site construction costs. For example, the E2E TCO of energy storage assets at sites in Vietnam is reduced by 31%.

  • In cyclic use scenarios, smart lithium batteries participate in grid power scheduling through intelligent collaboration between sites and grids. New business models such as staggering electricity usage and VPP will also generate benefits for operators. For example, a VPP site in China can generate an additional $800 in annual gains through site-grid collaboration.

  • In addition to intelligent O&M and power supply, site digitalization will visualize, manage, and optimize energy efficiency and carbon emissions, improving operational efficiency and slashing TCO.
