Huawei Digital Power APAC 5th Smart PV Technology Workshop Unveils Groundbreaking Grid-Forming Solutions

Apr 25, 2025

[Shenzhen, China, April 25, 2025] - Huawei's FusionSolar APAC Smart PV Technology Workshop, centered on the theme of “Grid-Forming Technology,” concluded successfully. The event gathered more than 200 industry leaders and experts from the Asia-Pacific region to explore advanced grid-forming solutions, aimed at accelerating the region's transition to a sustainable and resilient energy system.

Sun Xiaofeng, the President of Global Smart PV Business Development Huawei Digital Power

Sun Xiaofeng, the President of Global Smart PV Business Development Huawei Digital Power, opened the event with a speech highlighting Essential for enabling seamless power exchanges across borders, grid-forming BESS technologies also support the large-scale integration of renewable energy. In pursuit of sustainability goals, these technologies are expected to ensure the stability, resilience, and reliability of power systems, while fostering regional collaboration and advancing the transition to a cleaner, more interconnected energy future.

Huawei Unveils Grid-Forming Technology for Seamless Renewable Energy Integration

Dr. Liu Yunfeng, Chief Scientist of Huawei Digital Power

Dr. Liu Yunfeng, Chief Scientist of Huawei Digital Power, highlighted that Huawei's Grid-Forming (GFM) technology is essential for integrating large-scale renewable energy sources into the grid. He emphasized that GFM technology provides critical functions like inertia, frequency regulation, and voltage support, ensuring stable and reliable grid operation, even in weak-grid environments.

Huawei has introduced its Grid-Forming Smart Renewable Energy Generator Solution, combining its advanced capabilities in PV, energy storage, and grid-forming technologies. This innovative solution boosts new energy access by 40%, enhances stability by reconstructing voltage, frequency, and power angle, and ensures both safety and reliability. The solution equipped with the function of switching between the grid forming and grid following can enable the grid stability operation and the fluctuation of nominal power between the mode switching can be less than 20% and the switching time can be less than 200ms. By integrating digital and power electronics technologies, it enables the full digitalization of power plants.

Dr. Zhang Shengxiang, Power Grid Specialist of Huawei Digital Power

Dr. Zhang Shengxiang, Power Grid Specialist of Huawei Digital Power, highlights the critical role of Huawei's Grid-Forming Battery Energy Storage System (GFM BESS) in enhancing grid stability, particularly in regions with high renewable energy penetration, such as the Red Sea, China, and Cambodia. The GFM BESS provides essential services like inertia response, fast frequency regulation, voltage support, and black start capabilities, addressing the challenges posed by intermittent renewable energy sources. Its grid-forming capabilities enable seamless integration, ensuring stability for cross-border and regional grids, facilitating energy exchange, and supporting grid interconnection. This technology is pivotal in enabling the reliable and resilient operation of power systems in the face of growing renewable energy integration.
