Compared with conventional lead-acid batteries, lithium-ion batteries have obvious advantages such as high energy density, small footprint, long cycle life, and simple O&M. Lithium-ion batteries will be a preferred substitute for lead-acid batteries in the data center industry. To address concerns about the safety of lithium-ion batteries, Huawei leverages technological innovation and safety certification to ensure that its lithium-ion battery energy storage systems are highly safe.

Technological Innovation: Reliable Hardware and AI for Safety Assurance

Reliable hardware: Huawei SmartLi uses electrochemical cells made of the most stable lithium-ion material lithium iron phosphate. They do not catch fire or explode in needle puncture testing. SmartLi 3.0 uses a battery module-level fire extinguisher. In the case of overheating or thermal runaway, the flame can be put out quickly and accurately, eliminating fire risks inside the modules.

AI: Huawei SmartLi uses a three-layer battery management system (BMS) to implement refined management. The AI intelligent algorithm predicts short circuits inside electrochemical cells and reports warnings in advance to protect the safety of the lithium-ion battery system. In addition, the SmartLi supports a mixture of old and new batteries and automatic group-based battery capacity testing to enable self-management.

Safety Certification: Comprehensive Verification from Components to Systems

Huawei SmartLi has undergone safety certifications at cell, module, and system levels in accordance with IEC, UL, UN, and GB standards. It is the data center lithium-ion battery product that has passed the most diverse certifications and most comprehensive tests in the industry. The UL1973 certification and the UL 9540A testing and evaluation further endorse the safety and reliability of the SmartLi.

With all these features and robust performance, Huawei SmartLi 3.0 will create greater value for customers and partners. Looking into the future, Huawei will increase R&D investment and work with customers, associations, and other industry players to promote the growth of the lithium-ion battery industry, facilitating the sustainable development of data centers.
